About SNAP-8
SNAP-8 is an acetylated octapeptide elongated from the N-terminal region of SNAP-25, a core component of the SNARE complex that mediates vesicle fusion at the synapse. The proposed mechanism is competitive: the fragment competes with native SNAP-25 for its position in the assembling complex, destabilising it and reducing fusion efficiency. It is the peptide most commonly used in topical formulation research where the objective is to study the delivery vehicle rather than the peptide itself.
It is highly water-soluble and stable — an easy peptide to work with. The variable worth attention is the N-terminal acetylation, which is not optional to the proposed mechanism; un-acetylated material is a different molecule and shows up as a mass difference of 42 daltons on the certificate.
